In this experiment we were exploring sand and silt. We were specifically looking at silt as having smaller particles than sand.
We wanted to separate sand and silt. First, we added a couple spoonfuls of water to the sand from the local beach. Next, the kids vigorously mixed the sand and water in the small vials.
We left the mixture to rest overnight to allow the particles to settle.
The following day, they observed that the sand settled at the bottom of the vials, and the silt formed a layer on top of the sand.
Here is the record sheet we used. Little Guy is pointing at the air he labeled at the top of the vial. He also labeled water. silt, and sand.
