The next activity in the rock unit is all about observing and classifying rocks.
The kids first "shopped" for large pebbles.
Each one of them decided how to group their rocks using a simple place mat. Big Sister had categories like stripped, oval-shaped, small, sparkling, etc. Little Guy's categories included rocks that are shaped like an animal, and similar colors.
Here Big Sister was washing her pebbles to enhance their appearance.
Both kids studied some of the rocks from their collections, and added their findings to their rock sheets. Above you can see Big Sister looking at an obsidian rock with the microscope, and the sheet for that particular rock.
My favorite part about this unit is that rocks are everywhere!
